Truly. I didn’t realise that they were any other colours, except, perhaps the occasional black ones.

Then a Black Eyed Bulbul happened to get in front of my wife’s binoculars when she was watching someone windsurfing on a dam.

Hey! It’s got yellow under its belly, she said.

And that was the start of our interest in birds. Here are some of the beautiful creatures that are out there for all to see.

The top middle one, we’ve had in our garden in Johannesburg, The one bottom left is a garden bird here in Knysna. Bottom middle, you can see anywhere next to water and top right anywhere when you’re driving outside of a town.

Top left and bottom right need a visit to Kruger National Park or similar destination.
