Career Day at Gallagher Combined School

On August 21st, 2024, Gallagher Combined School held its much-anticipated Career Day. The event started at 12:00 PM, with excitement filling the air as students from grades 7 to 11 gathered to explore various career paths. Ms. Makola, who was the Programme Director, opened the event with a warm welcome. Following her, Mr. Moyo led the gathering in a brief but powerful opening prayer. Then, Ms. Bisimwa took to the stage to give a heartfelt welcome address to everyone present.

The students had the opportunity to present their career choices. Their interests ranged widely, with some aspiring to become lawyers, architects, agriculturalists, software developers, and more. Each learner confidently explained why they had chosen their desired careers, showing just how much thought and passion they had put into their future goals.

The highlight of the day was the presentations by the guest speakers, who shared their personal career journeys and provided invaluable advice.

First, we heard from Ms. Masango, a psychologist. She talked about the different areas within psychology and the subjects needed to pursue a career in this field. She shared her own experience and encouraged learners to consider psychology as a meaningful and rewarding career.

Next, Mr. Tsutsa, an IT Technician, took the stage. He discussed the various fields in IT and explained how one could enter the industry, even without a university degree. He emphasized the importance of certifications like CCNA and highlighted the flexibility of working in IT.

Ms. Kukwane, an IT Auditor, then gave an insightful presentation on what it takes to be an IT Auditor. She detailed the requirements and what the job entails, helping the learners understand more about this career.

Following her, Ms. Raza, an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher in South Korea, shared her journey. She explained the steps needed to become an ESL teacher and talked about the rewarding experience of teaching abroad.

Ms. Sambo, an accountant, was next. She informed the learners about the subjects needed to pursue accounting, especially the importance of Pure Maths. Her talk was both practical and encouraging.

Afterward, Mr. Derek, who is one of the Directors at Gallagher Combined School, shared his unique career path. Though he initially qualified as an engineer, he switched careers and is now an accountant. His story showed the learners that it is okay to change paths and find something you love.

Mr. Mbokodo, a Traffic Officer with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), then took the stage. He explained that the JMPD offers more than just traffic control positions; there are various career opportunities within the department, including study programs.

Next, candidate lawyer Sakhile Ngobe shared his journey in the legal field. He motivated the learners to aim higher and described the different areas of law such as public and commercial law, giving a detailed breakdown of the study path.

Finally, Mr. Tokela Hlagala, an author, lecturer, and sports management graduate, concluded the day. He spoke about his book Behind the Veil of Student Entrepreneurship and encouraged students to always think outside the box and explore creative avenues in their careers.

The event was both informative and inspiring. Gallagher Combined School’s Career Day successfully provided students with the knowledge and motivation to pursue their dreams, no matter how diverse or challenging they might seem.
